Online Payment Fraud: Act in the First Hour

Money stolen through UPI, cards or OTP fraud can sometimes be frozen mid-transit — but only if you report fast. Here is the exact sequence.

1. Call 1930 immediately

1930 is the national cyber fraud helpline. The sooner you call after the money leaves, the higher the chance of freezing it before it is withdrawn — treat the first hour as golden.

2. Report on cybercrime.gov.in

File the complaint on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal with transaction IDs, amounts, dates and the fraudster's number/UPI ID. Save the acknowledgement number — every later step quotes it.

3. Inform your bank the same day

Report the unauthorised transaction to your bank/UPI app and ask for written acknowledgement. Under RBI's customer-liability rules, prompt reporting sharply limits what you can lose — delay increases your liability.

4. Preserve every piece of evidence

Screenshots of messages, call logs, payment screens, emails. Do not delete the chat in anger — it is your case file.

5. File a complaint at the police station / cyber cell

For significant amounts, follow up the online report with a written complaint locally. Carry the 1930/portal acknowledgement and evidence.

6. Escalate if the bank drags its feet

If a legitimate reversal claim stalls, escalate through the bank's grievance officer and then the RBI Banking Ombudsman (cms.rbi.org.in) — free and online.

Good to know: No bank, wallet or "customer care" ever needs your OTP, PIN or full card number. Anyone asking for these is the fraud — including callers claiming your account is "blocked".
