PF Stuck? EPF Withdrawal & Employer Default, Step by Step

Whether your claim is rejected or your employer is deducting PF but not depositing it, EPFO has a defined escalation path. Use it in this order.

1. Check your PF passbook first

Log in to the EPFO member portal (or UMANG app) and open your passbook. Confirm what is actually credited — many "missing PF" cases are really missing employer deposits, which changes the path.

2. Fix KYC before filing claims

Most withdrawal rejections are KYC issues: Aadhaar, PAN and bank account must be seeded and verified, and your name/date of birth must match across them. Correct these on the portal, then re-file the online claim.

3. Write to your employer

If deposits are missing, raise it with HR/employer in writing (email is fine) and keep payslips showing the PF deduction. Deducting PF and not depositing it is a serious statutory default.

4. File a grievance on EPFiGMS

epfigms.gov.in is EPFO's official grievance portal — attach your member ID, passbook extract and employer correspondence. Note the registration number and track it.

5. Escalate to the Regional PF Commissioner

EPFO has real teeth: it can determine dues, recover them from the employer and levy interest and damages. A written complaint to the Regional Office with your evidence triggers this.

6. Use RTI if EPFO itself goes silent

An RTI asking for the status and file movement of your claim/grievance usually shakes a stuck file loose — see our RTI guide.

Good to know: Keep every payslip and Form 16. In employer-default cases, your own deduction proof is the strongest document you hold.
